Professor Peter Kagwanja is a Kenyan intellectual, adviser, and policy strategist. He is currently the President and Chief Executive at the Africa Policy Institute (API) and an Adjunct scholar at the University of Nairobi and the Kenya National Defence University (NDU). Kagwanja is a former Adviser to the Government of President Mwai Kibaki (2007-2013). He served as a lead expert in the team that drafted Kenya’s Foreign Policy (November 2014), Chief Strategist in the development of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
He was Executive Director of the National Secretariat on the 2010 Constitution Referendum. Regionally, Professor Kagwanja has served as Special Adviser to the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and consults for African Governments, the African Union (AU), and UN Agencies. He has been a visiting scholar at numerous international universities including Oxford University and the University of Pretoria. Kagwanja is a Member of numerous boards including the China-Africa Institute, Beijing. He has authored many articles, book chapters, and books. His latest book is War for Peace: Kenya’s Military in the African Mission in Somalia, 2012-2020 (edited). Prof. Kagwanja holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (USA).
