About Me

Prof. Daniel Ochieng Orwenjo is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Language and Communication Studies (CLCS) within the School of Social Sciences and Technology at The Technical University of Kenya, where he also serves as the Chairman of the Department of Kiswahili and African Languages. A renowned applied linguist, Prof. Orwenjo’s research focuses on the intersection of linguistics with other disciplines such as education, law, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. He emphasizes how linguistic knowledge can be applied to solve real-world problems and, conversely, how knowledge from these disciplines can address linguistic issues. Prof. Orwenjo holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, which he obtained with magna cum laude honors in 2009. He also holds a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (2003) and a Bachelor of Education in Humanities (1998), both from Kenyatta University in Kenya. His research focuses on exploring early literacy practices and the environments that preschool children in western Kenya are exposed to. His work investigates how these early exposures influence children’s literacy development when they begin formal schooling. This research is part of his broader interest in how linguistics can contribute to solving real-world challenges, particularly in education.

Since 2014, Prof. Orwenjo has been a Senior Lecturer at The Technical University of Kenya, where he is actively involved in both teaching and research. Previously, he served as a Tutorial Fellow at Kenyatta University from 2004 to 2009.
